Our overseas recruitment program

The Federal Live-In Caregiver Program remains a very viable solution for both our applicants and our clients. If you are not successful at attracting someone locally, you may have a solid solution just waiting to happen.

HOW HAS THE FEDERAL LIVE-IN CAREGIVER PROGRAM CHANGED?..
As of April 1, 2010, families seeking skilled caregivers from overseas will now be required to..

- Cover all recruitment costs (which cannot be recouped from the candidate)
- Pay for the relocation expenses in order for the nanny to arrive in Canada
- Provide health care insurance until they qualify for provincial programs (OHIP within 3 months)
- Arrange a workers compensation package in case of on-the-job accidents (WSIB)
- Agree to a new detailed, and mandatory, contract strictly outlining hours and salary

HAS EXECU-NANNIES STOPPED DOING OVERSEAS SPONSORSHIPS?..
The answer is NO! We still have many qualified, experienced and screened workers from various locations across the world and are currently processing applications under the new legislation. Our agency is prepared to comply with the new changes and our employers are willing to as well. The reason why Execu-Nannies has maintained our overseas placement service is because our clients have ALWAYS payed recruitment costs and have contributed to relocating the nannies to Canada. The idea that health insurance and workers compensation is only now required is foreign to us as this has always been part of the packages for our applicants. These changes will really only affect services and families who have traditionally taken advantage of overseas workers fighting for a better life in our wonderful country.

HOW WILL THIS EFFECT CANADIAN FAMILIES?..
The new legislation will make it more costly to employers to arrange for overseas recruitment. Over the last few years, we have seen many agents charging no money to clients and thousands to the nannies, so families who have taken advantage of those "deals" may be surprised by what it actually costs when you use an ethical agency. But we talk with hundreds of new families every year who have been tricked into free or cheap sponsorships and have ended up paying 2 or 3 agencies different fees amounting to what our total fee would be anyways, due to poor fit and non-existent screening with those services. The saying goes: "You get what you pay for," and we whole-heartedly agree. While it may cost more up front, the residual value to your family as a new, stable caregiver is intergrated into your home from abroad will be undeniable.

WHY GO OVERSEAS? THE REASONS..
We facilitate success by understanding the challenges that you have faced in searching locally. We understand the issues of why you may need to go outside Canada. You may be located in an area that is remote. You may desire a different cultural background. You may simply love a fresh attitude and a newcomer. You may just need to find fresh talent. Whatever the reason, we understand it and make sure that the decision making process is sound.

COMMITMENT..
Our expectations for commitment are clear. You are not simply facilitating someone’s arrival in Canada. Therefore, it is made clear to the applicant where you live, the upsides as well as the downsides to the location. They will also understand what the key goals for performance are. For example, if the relationship and care of the children are paramount, you will be presented candidates who are never bored with children. If your children are in school a full day and some overseeing of homework and giving meals and organizing is the priority, we will recommend someone who loves a quiet day on their own at home.

At any rate, this commitment will be well supported by your overseas applicant arriving soon.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR SOMEONE TO ARRIVE?..
It will take up to 8 weeks to receive Service Canada approval. Depending upon where your applicant is processing from it can take anywhere from 2 months to 1 year if there is not a heavy work load at the embassy. Always have a “plan B” in effect as there can be delays due to health tests being repeated, or additional verification of documents by the embassy.

A CONNECTION BEFORE HE / SHE ARRIVES..
There are ways to establish a bond prior to arrival. We arrange e-mails, letters and pictures to go back and forth. It’s fun for the children to have a “pen pal.”

ORIENTATION AND INDUCTION..
We have a comprehensive guide for you to use to direct you into the many areas of orientation for newcomers. Life is different where they have come from. Intelligent newcomers will surprise you when you show them once and never again. Some take a little more time to catch on as the language can be a bit of a barrier for the first month.

Generally we recommend that you make them feel welcome, but don’t treat them as a guest, or you will quickly become overburdened. Be prepared for a three month period of them getting to know our ways. Everyone may struggle for the first few weeks and then all of a sudden it just all comes together.

FREE SPONSORSHIP PROGRAMS DON’T WORK AND ARE NOW ILLEGAL..
Be wary of the many agencies out there that offer this. Remember, if you don't pay the fee, under the new legislation, you can be charged for not complying with the requirement of paying all recruitment, relocation and health care costs. These unscrupulous agencies often promote the ability to “leave your job” when you get here if you don’t like the location, or the work. Some never arrive on your doorstep after you wait for them. They are here, but they have gone underground.

OUR OVERSEAS FILES..
We have pictures, dear family letters, references letters, educational documents and resumes. We usually have an Execu-Nannies overseas application form too. These can be e-mailed to you.
